Fort Shirley Heritage Association
headquarters and museum
|
The
Fort Shirley Heritage Association focus on the history of
Shirleysburg and surrounding Shirley Township. Its name
commemorates the pre-Revolutionary frontier fort in this
area, which was one of a line of forts constructed during
the French and Indian War to protect settlers from attack.
Although the fort was not involved in any major battles,
it served as a staging area for several campaigns during
its brief existence (1755-56).
The
Heritage Association has a small, varied collection of
local artifacts including
Native American items, furniture, clothing, photographs,
and documents. The
group publishes a community newsletter and sponsors
community events in
Shirleysburg
during the year.
