Greenwood Furnace State Park is a great place
to visit for the whole family. In addition to a full range of
outdoor recreational activities such as swimming, hiking, camping,
and picnicking, the park offers exhibits, research opportunities,
and historical activities related to the 70-year-period when a
complete iron-making community was located on what is now park
land. Exhibits, demonstrations, and an introductory video make the
Visitor Center the place to begin a visit; this is also where to
find the extensive information that has been collected on the
operation of the iron furnace and the workers and their families
who lived there.
Each year, on the first full weekend of
August, Old Home Days are celebrated with living history
presentations, craft demonstrations, and musical entertainment. Regular
weekend programs also include historic interpretation as well
natural history. For the past two summers, an Archeological Day
Camp, “Diggin’ the Past,” has attracted approximately 60 kids and up to
25 adults, who have worked together on a site
associated with the iron community.
